Schiedam | Gin & Mill Tour

The Schiedam windmills are the tallest traditional windmills in the world.

For centuries, the gin industry dominated in Schiedam. In its heyday, there were 392 distilleries, distilleries and mills in Schiedam. You can still taste and smell this everywhere in the city. The gin industry gave Schiedam the nickname Black Nazareth, because of its blackened buildings. Many old warehouses, distilleries and distilleries have since been transformed into homes, stores, restaurants, museums and galleries.

At one time, the city was home to more than thirty mills. These burner mills were used to grind grain for the distillers, who produced malt wine for the gin industry. Today, you can admire the historic windmills in Schiedam: De Walvisch, De Drie Koornbloemen, De Nolet, De Vrijheid, De Noord, De Palmboom, De Kameel, and the Babbersmolen.

The National Gin Museum is one of the main attractions of Schiedam. During a visit to the Jenevermuseum you literally step into the world of the jenever industry. Here you will take a look at the history of jenever, learn about the distillery and meet a number of distillers.

Nolet Mill

Mill De Nolet is not only the tallest mill in Schiedam but also the tallest mill in the world. The mill itself is 42.5 meters high, and with its aerodynamic sails, it reaches a height of 55 meters. Unlike the historic mills, De Nolet is modern: it was installed by the Nolet Distillery in 2005.

The Nolet mill and its distillery are a populair sight in Schiedam, attracting visitors from all over the world. Here, you can explore the bottling plant, discover how the famous Ketel 1 and Ketel One Vodka are crafted, and even step inside the world’s tallest scaffold mill. It’s the perfect mix of history, craftsmanship, and a little bit of gin magic!
