Nina Hagen

Catharina (Nina) Hagen (East Berlin, March 11, 1955) is a German singer, actress and songwriter.

Hagen was born in Berlin as the daughter of actress Eva-Maria Hagen and film script writer Hans Oliva-Hagen. She would follow the training to become an actress, but did not pass the selection procedure. She subsequently became a singer for various bands, including Automobil. This soon became her backing band. When she got sidetracked in the GDR as a result of her support for Wolf Biermann, she took the first opportunity to emigrate. She initially left for the United Kingdom with her mother.

In 1977 she returned to Germany and formed the Nina Hagen Band with the Berlin musicians Bernhard Potschka, Herwig Mitteregger, Manfred Praeker and Reinhold Heil. The self-titled debut album of the group, released in September 1978, including the hit Unbeschreiblich weiblich, first became a great success in Germany and then also in the Netherlands. In May 1979 it came to a split between Hagen and her band.

In 1982 Nunsexmonkrock appeared, where madness and genius meet, for example in Iki Maska, Antiworld and Born in Xixax. In Angstlos (1983) she picked up on the then prevailing trend of scratching (take Zarah for example). She continued this orientation towards dance on In Ekstase (1985).

After a few years of silence, Nina Hagen appeared in 1989, featuring Dope Sucks, originally written by Herman Brood .

Hagen had several husbands over the years. For some time she also had a relationship with Herman Brood and his former guitarist Ferdi Karmelk. With the latter, Hagen also had a daughter in 1981: Cosma Shiva Hagen.

In 2005 Hagen became involved in church volunteering for soldiers who refused service in the Iraq War.

From that moment on she became increasingly interested in the Christian faith.

In August 2009 she was baptized in the Evangelisch-Reformierte Kirche in Schüttorf.
