Johnny (JR) Cash (Kingsland (Arkansas), February 26, 1932 - Nashville (Tennessee), September 12, 2003) was an American country singer, guitarist, singer-songwriter, actor and author. He became known worldwide as The Man in Black and was notable for his deep baritone voice. He was married to Vivian Liberto from 1954 to 1966 and from 1968 until her death, to June Carter Cash, who died on May 15, 2003. Johnny Cash died a few months later (Sept. 12) at the age of 71 at Baptist Hospital in Nashville from diabetes. He was one of the most influential singers both inside and outside the country genre. For example, Johnny Cash landed 21st in Rolling Stone's list of the 100 greatest artists of all time.
In 1977 he was inducted into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and in 1980 Cash was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame as the youngest artist ever. Other recordings followed in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1992), America's Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame (1995), and posthumously into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame (2010) and the Memphis Music Hall of Fame (2013 ).
